A few subtle changes can make a kitchen friendlier for a bachelor, or a male who just loves to cook.

Let’s start by making the benchtop a little higher. Obviously this won’t help every male but it will make a big difference to anyone taller than average. Not only are the food preparation areas easier to use but washing up is more comfortable. Another way to assist washing up is a shallower sink. A standard countertop height is 910mm and you only need to raise it to 930 to make a huge difference. Do not go much higher as it will quickly start to feel like a bar top. The easiest way to get the extra height is to make the toe kick 20mm higher. This keeps the cabinetry to standard heights and lowers the cost.

Male Kitchen Gadgets

As you have raised the toe kick up you can use this extra space for a toe kick drawer: great for seldom used items, such as platters and baking trays and will appeal to gadget lovers.

Other gadgets include sensor extraction units that turn on and off when needed, fridge drawers, electric opening drawers that require no handles and soft close drawer runners that cannot be slammed shut.

The High Tech Kitchen

Working closely with the gadgets is technology. When designing the kitchen you should include wiring diagrams for TV outlets, internet access, network cabling and stereo speakers. Almost all these item have wireless options but as kitchens appliances are notorious for interfering with wireless signals the safer option is to hard wire.

Cooktops and Ovens

Ovens need to be big for big cuts of meat and need to have a pyrolitic cleaning option. This is where the oven door locks and then super heats the interior. Any cooking residue is then incinerated. Once it has cooled down enough the door unlocks and the ashes can be swept out for an effortless clean.

The cooktop should be either gas or induction. These two options offer the greatest control over output and can really pump out the heat if required. Unfortunately induction hobs have yet to come up with an effective wok cooking option so if the end user likes to cook this way a gas hob would be the way to go.

Colours and Texture

A thick dark granite benchtop will anchor the whole room and gives a solid no nonsense feel. The cool smooth surface of the granite can be continued onto the cabinetry by using a lacquer paint finish. Cabinetry should be a light neutral colour to give more impact to the granite. Colour can be added in the glass splash back or painted wall colours.

Remember when designing a kitchen for anyone always remember to think of the end user and design to their desires.
