The kitchen is often the center and most populated place in the home. Help increase its functionality with a second sink.
Many kitchen designs today include an area for prepping food, or entertaining guests. Custom kitchens that tailor the design to the needs of the homeowner are increasing in popularity, making a second kitchen sink a frequently used commodity. Taking how the space is used into consideration, will make the choice of a second sink the right one. Prep SinksA prep sink, or utility sink, is often a smaller version of the main kitchen sink. Placed at the opposite end of the kitchen work triangle, it helps to maximize the space of the kitchen, eliminating extra steps from the refrigerator or stove to the sink. Prep sinks will often have built in cutting boards, or removable baskets for soaking and washing fruits and vegetables. Garbage disposals, gantry style faucets, pot fillers and sprays are often useful components to have at the prep sink. For cooks who spend a great deal of time in the kitchen, some sink companies, such as Franke, have complete systems consisting of tracks to be hung above the prep area. These tracks systems can contain colanders, sink dividers and cutting boards, all sized to fit the sink and hung within reach. Bar SinksThe bar sink is an option for homeowners who do a great deal of entertaining away from the kitchen. The bar area may be located in another room, but contain the same or similar cabinets and counters as the kitchen to tie the designs together. Because the bar sink is often located so far from the kitchen sink, the design and finish of the sink do not have to match the style of the main kitchen sink, giving more opportunity for a decorative design. A brass or copper bar sink can be used to bring other finishes into the design, while a decorative stone sink can be a focal point all its own. A round bar sink, or a small bar sink can often help give an area utility without taking up too much space, if the area is small. Include a filter faucet, built in racks for glasses and a small fridge, to help keep the kitchen area clear and used for cooking while entertaining guests. Entertainment SinksDifferent from the bar sink, the entertainment sink is typically used in the kitchen, either on an island, or at a seated counter area. The entertainment sink can be used to keep food and beverages cool, and out in the open for guests coming into the area. Sinks like Elkay’s Mystic entertainment sink, offer both a large, shallow basin for containing ice and drinks, as well as a stylish decorative element that will fit beautifully into any modern kitchen space. Look for thin shallow sinks, that won’t take up too much of a seating area, while offering plenty of work space. Entertainment sinks can come in many different styles and finishes, to compliment any décor, whether matching the main kitchen sink, or having a unique style all its own. Remember to take the needs of the user into account when selecting a second sink and location. Sinks that are too close together, or are too small for practical use will do little but take up valuable counter space. Well placed sinks, however will add both style and function to the home.
